Book Review: Dragon Kin’s Blood by Jo Jo Gatenby

Dragon Kin's Blood

About the book: Dragon Kin’s Blood  COVER-BLOOD

Who do you trust when you can’t go home?

After centuries of hiding themselves and their shifting abilities from outsiders, the Dragon Kin decide to send a delegation of “dragon riders” to a nearby Lowlander territory. Eager to see the world, young Lauran quickly volunteers. But not all Lowlanders can be trusted. As the visit comes to an end, Lauran finds herself trapped in her draconic form—and hunted by an evil warlock. Desperate to protect herself and her people, she flees along the Dragon Spine Mountains, away from friends and foes alike.

Meanwhile, the last place Jenny wants to be during her summer break from university is on a family vacation with her mother’s new husband and his young son, Davy. Hoping for some peace and quiet, she explores a nearby cave—only to stumble into a portal to the Kingdom of Galahar, a land of magic and mythological creatures.

As Jenny searches for Davy, who follows her through the portal, and Lauran struggles for freedom, they come together with the help of Nath, an apprentice shaman of the Anishinabe people. Between Jenny’s technology and Nath’s magic, can they help Lauran escape the warlock’s relentless pursuit before he gets his hands on the Dragon Kin’s blood?

My Thoughts MAB-2026

I’m always drawn to fantasy that takes familiar ingredients and mixes them in slightly unexpected ways, and Dragon Kin’s Blood by Jo Gatenby does exactly that. We get dragon shapeshifters, a secluded mountain culture, political ambition in the form of a power-hungry duke, and a warlock who is clearly bad news for anyone in his path. It’s YA fantasy, but with some cozy touches—most notably the presence of kaffee—and the added wrinkle of two kids from our world suddenly finding themselves in the middle of a magical one.

The story begins with several characters moving through their own separate threads. When those threads finally weave together, the narrative gains momentum and becomes especially engaging. The dynamic between the characters is fun to watch develop, and a number of the side figures are interesting enough that I would happily spend more time with them in future installments.

The women in this story are particularly well drawn. Each one feels like an individual, with her own perspective and reactions rather than blending into the background. Gatenby’s prose is also approachable in the best way: clear, descriptive, and easy to follow without getting bogged down in excess detail.

At the same time, there are places where the story seems eager to move forward just when a moment might benefit from a little more space. Certain turning points arrive and resolve quickly, leaving me curious about how those experiences truly shaped the characters involved. The climactic sequence, which carries major stakes for the world and the people in it, might have landed even more strongly with a deeper look at what everyone was thinking and feeling as events unfolded.

One small personal note: I am absolutely the reader who flips to the map before beginning chapter one. The map included here is impressive in scope, though intricate enough that I occasionally had to pause and trace things out to keep track of where everyone was headed.

Overall, this is the kind of fantasy you can sink into without emotional whiplash or relentless grimness. The adventure unfolds steadily, the characters are enjoyable company, and the world hints at more stories still waiting to be told.

Dragon Kin’s Blood offers an inviting introduction to a magical setting filled with dragons, shifting alliances, and journeys across rugged landscapes.

Goes well with: a mug of kaffee, fresh bread, and a crackling fire.

My Thoughts MAB-2026

I’m a sucker for a good science-based thriller, and I also love medical drama, so as someone who came of age reading Michael Crichton, when I had the opportunity to review this book, I jumped at it, and Kevin Hwang’s writing caught me and held me fast from beginning to end.

What unfolds on the Paradise is more than a contained outbreak story. It is a pressure cooker at sea, blending investigative tension with deeply personal stakes. The illness may be the catalyst, but the heart of the novel lies in the people trapped with it: physicians, security officers, crew members, and passengers from wildly different backgrounds. The cast feels varied and fully human, and the story makes it brutally clear that no one is insulated by rank, expertise, or good intentions. I was especially drawn to Dr. Peter Palma, whose history shadows every choice he makes. His compassion is genuine, but so is his fragility, and that combination gives the narrative real emotional weight.

The ethical questions here are not abstract. They land hard and fast as alliances fracture and fear overrides reason. The atmosphere grows tighter with every chapter, and the cruise ship setting amplifies that claustrophobia in a way that feels almost uncomfortably plausible. The pacing never lets up, yet the author still finds room to explore what happens when advanced medicine collides with the most primitive parts of human nature. More than once, I felt echoes of 2020 in the way misinformation spreads, authority falters, and ordinary people are forced to confront who they really are under pressure.

Ultimately, The Regression Strain delivers exactly what I want from a medical thriller: credible science, escalating stakes, and characters whose choices matter. It is unsettling without being gratuitous, thoughtful without slowing the momentum, and it lingers after the final page in the way the best speculative fiction does. If you like your suspense grounded in biology and human frailty rather than gimmicks, this one absolutely belongs on your list.

Goes well with: strong black coffee in a thick mug, eaten-at-midnight leftovers from the fridge, and the uneasy feeling of being far from shore with nowhere to run.

A Treatise on Martian Chiropractic Manipulation and Other Satirical Tales

A Treatise Martian Chiro Ebook Cover 10.18.25About the Book: A Treatise on Martian Chiropractic Manipulation and Other Satirical Tales

Human beings are flawed creatures, and humor is the perfect means to exploit the endless fodder of our shortcomings. This multi-genre collection of twenty-one short satirical stories will leave you smirking, chuckling, scratching your head, and maybe even muttering to yourself “WTF is this?”

From the award-winning author of the acclaimed short story collections “Core Truths” and “Passageways: Short Speculative Fiction” comes something a little bit irreverent and a whole lot of weird.

Ketchup-covered chiropractors on Mars. Wealthy vigilante housewives battling coffee-addicted aliens. Cheerleaders protesting unrestricted access to cupcakes. Canine doulas. Hallucinating marine biologists. No one is immune from the absurdity.

My Thoughts  MAB-2026

If satire is a mirror, A Treatise on Martian Chiropractic Manipulation and Other Satirical Tales tilts it just enough to catch the light at an unexpected angle.

This multi-genre collection moves between speculative fiction, satire, social commentary, and moments that are deliberately unsettling. Humor is very much part of the mix, but it is not the whole of it. Fox allows different stories to do different kinds of work, and the tonal shifts feel intentional rather than scattered.

The titular piece is a standout and an effective entry point into the collection’s sensibility. Beyond that, some of my favorite stories include “A Feral Yearning,” “Community Watch,” and “Crazy for Coqui.” These pieces succeed for very different reasons. Community Watch is the most overtly tense, grounded in suspicion and collective behavior. As someone who has always struggled to fit in, and is now in her second term as a member of her HOA’s board of directors, this piece particularly resonated with me. A Feral Yearning and Crazy for Coqui feel more observational, exploring ideas and impulses without pressing for a single emotional response.

“Is That an Emotional Support Robot?” left me wanting more, which I mean as a compliment. “Population Management” and “Obfuscation Nation,” by contrast, are both brilliant and disturbing, stories that do not soften their implications or rush toward resolution.

Across twenty-one stories, Fox demonstrates strong control of craft while working across genres and tones. Some pieces are amusing, others thought-provoking or quietly unsettling. There isn’t a weak choice in the collection, only different entry points depending on what kind of story you’re in the mood for.

Goes well with: coffee made from real Brazilian beans and a chocolate-mint cupcake.

My Thoughts Melissa

I’ve been following Kat Preston and her friends since the very beginning of K.C. Tansley’s series, and I’m always glad to step back into their world of haunted heirlooms, family curses, and time slips that send you tumbling into history before you’ve quite caught your breath.

This fourth installment, The Girl Who Trusted Ghosts, wastes no time plunging Kat, Evan, and the other heirs into danger. Their task sounds deceptively straightforward: gather the ingredients needed for a long-hidden spell that might finally reveal what bound their families together centuries ago. Of course, nothing is ever simple in Kat’s world. Dark magic stalks their every move, kidnappings raise the stakes, and one ill-fated incantation hurls them straight into 1591 England — a time when their ancestors faced off against the Dark One himself.

What I continue to love about this series is the sense of continuity. Each book has its own adventure, but the threads of family history, betrayal, and legacy weave tighter and tighter the further we go. You can read this one on its own, but the experience is infinitely richer if you’ve been along for the whole ride.

Kat herself is growing in fascinating ways. She’s braver, more determined, and her connection to both her ancestors and her own abilities deepens here. Evan, too, comes into sharper focus, and their relationship—complicated by curses and centuries-old secrets—adds both tenderness and heartbreak. Watching them together makes the looming question of whether they’ll ever get a happy ending all the more poignant.

Tansley keeps the pacing taut, but what lingers for me are the details: the way ancestral ghosts become guides, the discovery of why some of the original families were destroyed, and the truth behind the split from six to four. These moments give the story weight, reminding us that the battle against darkness is never just about spells and enemies; it’s about the choices people make, generation after generation.

By the time I turned the last page, I felt like I’d been on a roller coaster—twists, plunges, and breathless pauses where you’re sure the next drop will finish you, only to find you’re strapped in for one more plunge. It’s exhilarating, and it leaves me more than ready for the conclusion in Book Five.

A great read, thoroughly engaging and captivating. If you’re looking for a magical family saga with stakes that stretch across a thousand years, and a heroine who has truly come into her own, this series delivers. I’m already signed up for wherever Kat’s journey takes us next.

My Thoughts MAB-Summer2025

It’s rare to stumble upon a middle-grade fantasy that hits all the sweet spots—clean prose, crisp pacing, and a heartfelt emotional core—but Sterling Fierce and the Lost Dragons absolutely delivers. Lori Tchen’s novel doesn’t just check boxes; it creates its own niche, where high fantasy meets emotional maturity in a story that’s as much about inner growth as it is about outward adventure.

Sterling, our young witch hunter, is no moody teen stereotype. He’s perceptive, principled, and refreshingly sincere. There’s a quiet emotional intelligence pulsing through this book, and it’s most evident in how Sterling learns to let others in. Found family is a well-worn trope, but here it feels honest and unforced—organic, even. Tchen doesn’t rush her character dynamics. The bonds between Sterling and his companions bloom with subtle tension and believable warmth. You feel the stakes, not just in the looming magical threat, but in the fragile trust these characters extend to one another.

This is also one of those rare books where the world-building serves the story instead of overshadowing it. Everen is lush without being overwhelming, magical without becoming saccharine. Tchen strikes a fine balance between wonder and danger; every enchanted glade feels like it could turn deadly at a moment’s notice. And the dragons—ah, the dragons—are treated with reverence and gravitas, never reduced to mere plot devices. The result is a setting that feels as alive as the characters who populate it.

For all its action (and yes, there are sword-swinging, spell-slinging battles galore), the novel’s strength lies in its heart. Courage here isn’t brute force—it’s vulnerability, connection, the willingness to admit you can’t do it alone.

If you’re looking for a richly imagined fantasy that respects its audience—young or not—and you’re a sucker for stories where magic is matched by emotional depth, Sterling Fierce and the Lost Dragons deserves a spot on your shelf. I, for one, can’t wait to see where Sterling’s story takes him next.

My Thoughts Melissa A. Bartell

Part thriller, part human drama, The Calendar is a truly original novel about a classic science fiction trope: what would you do if you knew a giant meteor was about to slam into the Earth. 05 Social Media 3

But in WM Gunn’s deft hands, this book defies the tropes, forgoing (mostly) the expected flash and bang for quieter moments. The plot progresses not with one protagonist, but in a series of vignettes told over the course of a calendar year, showing us not only who changes when faced with impending doom, and who stays the same.

The early chapters introduce us to the characters – lawyers with marital issues, doctors with challenging patients, criminals, do-gooders, and world leaders faced with what to tell their various constituents. As the novel progresses, details are filled in both with the external crises of the traveling asteroid, nicknamed Goliath, and the more immediate goings-on at home. Each flip of the calendar page (or new chapter) heightens the tension and makes the characters increasingly more dimensional, until they are as real as anyone we readers might know.

The story of the pizzeria owner, Max, who offers free pies to his city’s unhoused population, really struck a chord with me, reminding me of my own local pizza maker who fired up her oven in a shop without electricity to feed first-responders and those who’d lost their homes after last year’s back-to-back hurricanes on Florida’s Gulf Coast. It’s that kind of resonance that makes this novel so compelling.

One detail that makes it even more relatable is the addition of a song that goes with each month, with lyrics quoted in the text and a playlist provided at the end. It’s a nice touch and really added to my appreciation of the author’s work.

It’s not a spoiler to say that this book doesn’t have a happy ending. We’re told in the blurb that Earth won’t survive. But despite the fact that there’s no neat sci-fi solution, this book isn’t sad. It’s uplifting. It’s hopeful. In a world that seems increasingly dark, it reminds us that there are good people all around us. The Calendar should be on every discerning reader’s summer TBR list.

Goes well with: pizza, obviously, the Neapolitan kind with a crispy crust and blistered cheese, and beer or sweet tea, your choice.

A Madness UnmadeLaurel Rumbroom is the sole living resident of the Underhallow, where dead moths have been showing up at the gates in neatly wrapped packages.

My Thoughts: Melissa A. Bartell

The first book in E.K. Larson-Burnett’s Deathly Inheritance duology, A Madness Unmade, is a refreshing take on magic, ghosts, and the world outside our own perceptions where the latter find refuge.

I read the Kindle version of this book, and was thrilled when I encountered illustrations at the chapter breaks, because they were the icing on a beautifully flavored cake. Each layer of this novel was richer and more interesting than the next: first there’s the barefoot heroine Lauren, and her cat Goose. Then there are the house-ghosts – spirits who take care of her daily needs, including her education – Master Godwin take a bow. And there’s also the dead moths that keep appearing at Lauren’s door.

The final layer of this cake is the world-building. When I read about the first moving portrait, I was worried that this series would be a Harry Potter ripoff, especially since the blurbs all refer to that series. I was pleased to find that the Underhallow and its surrounding village are original, and refreshingly so.

If anything, this novel is most like an Edward Gorey drawing come to life. In fact, the images in my head as I read this were eerily similar to the 1980’s animated opening to the PBS Mystery series – except instead of a swooning woman, there’s Madame Rathert trailing seawater.

I’m not sure I’d want to live (or be un-alive) in the world Larson-Burnett has created, but I definitely enjoyed the visit.

Goes well with: hot tea, lemon tarts, and gingerbread.

My Thoughts MAB-Summer24

Nikhil Prabala’s “romantasy,” The Duchess of Kokora is a witty and delightful novel with the kind of self-possessed lead characters I always love to read. I was intrigued from the moment I read the synopsis, and immediately fell in love with the story. I especially appreciated the use of wordplay, creative cursing, and the many unfavorable comparisons between male human and equine anatomy.

The title character, Phera (the eponymous Duchess) has entered marriage games with a neighboring principality, ostensibly to find a prince, but really to reclaim her lost love Rocelle. I was a little dubious about a lesbian relationship being written by a man, but Prabala showed himself to be astute and attentive to detail. The last time I read such believable women from a male author was probably Arthur Golden’s Memoirs of a Geisha. But while that book was historical fiction, this one is set in a fantasy world with magic. (It’s worth mentioning that while marriage games are a common trope in fantasy romance, the idea felt fresh and original as treated in this book.)

04 XTRA AD - The Duchess of Kokora

While I enjoyed all of the characters, especially the leads, I also loved the world building in this book. I’m a little rusty on magic systems (I’m a recovered table-top role-player) but I didn’t have any issues following the use of magic, and rules thereof, in this novel.

The Duchess of Kokora is escapist fiction at its best. It doesn’t pander, but neither does it require notes and charts to follow the plot. Rather, I needed tissues handy because several scenes had me laughing out loud.

Overall, this is an excellent entry into the romantic fantasy genre, and a thoroughly engaging read.

Kait, a girl from Ireland, regrets her impulsive move to America-all because of an odd occurrence involving her deceased boyfriend’s lost surfboard. When tides turn and the moon shifts, Isaac, the new kid in town who despises the ocean, is forced to face the truth-a profound and powerful magic lives in the deep.

Guided by a wise surf master, mystical old women known as the Beachlings, and an open-hearted grandmother, six kids embark on transformative adventures that challenge their beliefs about possibilities and the intense nature of love.

Amethyst, The Shallows is the brand-new companion novel to The Aquamarine Surfboard.

Praise for this book:

Amethyst, The Shallows’ sensitive and potent prose stirs the reader, leaving a lasting impression. Although this novel is the second installment in a series, it stands strong independently, welcoming newcomers and returning readers alike.” Literary Titan

Spotlight: Revisiting The Legend of Rachel Peterson by J.T. Baroni

About the book, The Legend of Rachel Peterson Revised Rachel Front Cover

Outraged when The Post Gazette overlooks him for a promotion, 43-year-old Sports Writer Christian Kane quits the Paper and moves to the country to write fiction. Inspiration flows from a grave he stumbles upon in the woods. He pens The Legend of Rachel Petersen, a fascinating story revolving around the dead twelve-year-old girl laid to rest beneath the weathered tombstone in 1863. His book climbs the Best Seller lists; then Hollywood adapts it into a blockbuster movie. Kane becomes rich and famous; but then! Does an enraged Rachel become more than a figment of the writer’s imagination and rise from her grave, seeking revenge on him for slandering her name?

Revisiting Rachel…

I reviewed this book almost exactly eleven years ago, and loved the story and the craft behind it. It’s a ghost story that is partly supernatural and partly psychological and delves into how we respond to stress and loss, as well as success we’re not certain we earned.  You can read my original review here: Review: The Legend of Rachel Petersen, by J.T. Baroni

Recently, the author contacted me to share that he’d published a revised edition which includes an additional “… 130,000 words to the background, details, and descriptions, along with a brand-new final chapter which adds one more twist… ” He’s not wrong. The original version was a gripping story with many layers. The revised edition is just as layered, but is also deeper, richer, and more immersive. It’s the perfect read for a chilly October evening, and I highly recommend it.
