Egalia’s Daughters
Gerd Brantenberg
Hilarious, thought provoking, and disturbing, this book was sent to me by Kristi of Interrupted Wanderlust as part of a book swap that was hosted by Amy of Beauty Joy Food, and it came packaged with (unbeknownst to Kristi) one of my favorite candies - smooth-n-melty mints which are sort of an appropriate snack for this book, as it’s both sharp and sweet, at various times.
Imagine a world where women wear the pants, literally, and men stay home and care for children, and put bows in their beards to look pretty. Imagine a world where “boys can’t be fisherwomen,” and fathers have to bring their babies to their wives’ workplaces several times a day so they can be breastfed.
Now reflect on the fact that while the book exaggerates to make a point, the roles of men in Egalia are not that different from those of women in the latter half of the twentieth century, and, sadly, even today.
Brantenberg manages to share these imaginings in a way that is both outrageous and wonderful at the same time.
