oh gosh, I had forgotten Anne McCaffrey - loved the entire Pern series. I read somewhere that they were going to try to make a movie but I haven't heard anything more.

Your post reminded me so much of my childhood, I read many of the same books as you. Just the other day whilst clearing out some old boxes I came across Stevenson's Garden of Verses and although I have not read it for a long while, whilst holding it in my hand I was reminded of a old comforting friend.

“Oh, how do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
I do think it the pleasantest thing
     Ever a child can do.”

And:

"Hush, hush, whisper who dares
Christopher Robin is saying his prayers"

Are two of my favorite verses ever!

I read the Little House books to my nieces and loved them. I also loved "Harriet The Spy and the Konigsburg book. And Dick Francis was simply amazing!

Thanks for the wonderful memories.

Regarding your statement, "and fell into a love affair with the misogynistic gourmand that would last for decades," mine began when I was 12. To find lots of "wolfean" lore, feel free to stop by www.nerowolfe.org. We have over 1,000 pages devoted to the genius detective and his entourage.
