There are mysteries that take place in almost every walk of life. I’m currently reading one that combines the entertainment industry and (one of my favorite venues) cafes, and one of my favorite fluff series involves a caterer in Colorado, and is laced with recipes.
One career path that is grossly underrepresented, however, is that of the realtor. I can think of only two real estate mysteries, and frankly, neither of them was particularly good.
Maybe I’m biased because I used to work in real estate finance, but I think it’s a natural industry. I mean, first you have all these open houses to send victims and killers too, and then there are the show homes, with art all over the walls and priceless knick-knacks on the mantel, and then there are lock boxes which could easily stash a clue instead of a key.
I hereby lobby for more real estate mysteries.
Even if I have to right one myself.

I understand what you mean. A serial killer would have a good cover as a Real Estate Agent, but then again his sales might decline just a bit. I do recall one instance in which there was a “supernatural serial killer” that was a real estate agent. It was in an episode of the show “Night Stalker” This woman found a way to ingest a piece of young women’s pituitary gland (if I recall correctly) in order to have perpetual life. She only used an empty house to lure a victim to once, but by that time investigators were already pretty much on to her.
Hi Melissa, your idea of the real estate murderer caught my attension. I think it is a great topic but maybe we need to flip the idea and make the serial killer the person looking to purchase the house, not the agents ,this way the murderer can go from listing to listing bumping off these helpless greedy professionals. I can see it now the killer has his copy of the real estate flyer circling all the the listing that he wants to visit while the agents show up all alone in the vancant homes , as they step down the creeky stairs of the cellar the agent goes down first with the killer following behind , she feels that she has put herself in a vulnerble possiton and there is no way out, slowly the killer unscrews the only light bulb in the cellar leaving it complely dark . How does this sound ? I know there are plenty of greedy agents out there so there would be tons for the story line . what do you guys think ? your turn to write the next murder.
Speaking of story lines? Milissa did you get my recent e-mail waiting for you reply. Everone have a great day
GREG .
Thanks for your reply, I resent my second E-mail to you it must have not gone through. We are getting ready to take the kids out for Halloween, so who is next to write the the second muder for Location Location Location .
Thanks for coming by my blog!!
And, yes, I agree about the realtor biz which would make for a good series. I’ve always imagined what it would be like for a realtor to go to show a house and find a dead body.
But then, I imagine what it would be like to walk into a public restroom and find a dead body. So what do I know?
I haven’t read the caterer series for a long time (I assume it’s the Diane Mott Davidson one?), but another of my favorites is the Susan Wittig Albert China Bayles series. (Although I haven’t read that in awhile either.)
